Grades 9, 10 – IAYP, Panchilingeswar
A crucial requirement of the lAYP framework is a qualifying journey, which the students of grade 9 and 10 embarked upon on 17th December 2024.
The journey began with a six-hour bus ride to Panchalingeswar, Odisha. After freshening up, they had their first briefing session, where the students understood how to use the lAYP Online Record Books and learned about useful survival skills, such as first aid and navigation.
The following day, they were introduced to the Practice Journey. Their day commenced at 6 am and they engaged in refreshing morning exercises before breakfast. Then, at around 8:30 am, the students had a rock-climbing session at the Nilagiri Plateau. This activity proved instrumental in preparing them for the challenges of the Qualifying Journey. After returning to the campsite and a short break, they engaged in two interesting and informative sessions on tent pitching and learning the functions of their equipment.
On December 19, the students initiated their Qualifying Journey after their morning exercises. By applying their theoretical knowledge to practical use, they were able to successfully engage in rappelling and river crossing. This new experience emphasized the importance of both physical and mental alertness while trekking. Following this, they had a session on different types of maps, specifically contour maps. The evening featured a team activity where students prepared their meals over self-built fires, fostering collaboration and camaraderie.
20th December marked the end of the Qualifying Journey. After a strenuous morning exercise session, the students began their trek, which covered 1500 feet and involved slippery, steep slopes as well as dense forests. They eventually reached a famous temple, built around a stunning waterfall, worshipping Lord Shiva. Although exhausted upon their return, the students ended the evening on a joyous note, gathering around a bonfire for laughter and music.
By the 21st of December, the Qualifying Journey was officially complete. The students returned to Kolkata with a variety of new skills, unexpected friendships and endless memories.
